Preface

The Cotutelle Program between Flinders University and several Dutch universities represents a well-established, highly successful international research collaborative. It enables like-minded PhD candidates and students from both sides of the globe to engage in rigorous, novel and globally-connected research. Established in 2017, the program was driven by the vision, enthusiasm and support of Professor Job Doornberg, and has since evolved into a distinctive double-degree platform. Prospective students are provided with an unparalleled opportunity to expand their horizons, benefit from mentorship by passionate academics, and contribute to cutting-edge research. The program’s success is reflected in the large number of candidates who have successfully completed and defended their PhDs. This is underpinned by a strong culture of collaboration, data sharing, and team-based research. Graduates are awarded two doctoral degrees—one from each participating institution—reflecting the integrated and truly international nature of the training experience.

This success is no coincidence. The Cotutelle Program unites motivated students with an interdisciplinary network of esteemed researchers, AI scientists, and specialist orthopaedic surgeons, supported by access to extensive clinical datasets from a high-volume Level 1 trauma centre. Importantly, visiting students are also given the special opportunity to live and work in one of the world’s most beautiful countries. Picturesque beaches, hiking trails and bustling cities are all at their doorstep. The nurturing and encouraging environment provided here in Adelaide is further instrumental to our success. We truly pride ourselves in providing a collaborative, team-centred approach towards research, strengthened by long-standing partnerships with renowned international Universities and institutes.

I am honoured to not only be a part of the unique blending of expertise from Flinders University/Medical Centre with that of Dutch and other international Universities, but also in shaping the future academic leaders of our Orthopaedic surgical field. This dynamic and innovative program is showing no signs of slowing anytime soon, and I wholeheartedly invite all dedicated and motivated students to join.
